Microsoft increases the read and write performance of Azure SQL Database

January 13, 2017

Microsoft announced this week that they have doubled the write performance of all Azure SQL Database offerings as well as the read performance on their Premium databases. These increases come with no change in prices to customers.

Microsoft states that the increased write performance should benefit bulk inserts, heavy batched data manipulation, as well as index maintenance operations. For Premium databases, heavy OLTP workloads with random read patterns might fit into smaller performance tiers than they are currently running. Therefore, if your premium workload is 50% below a Database Transaction Unit (DTU) utilization, you may be able to run them in the next lower Premium performance level.
